Methuen Girl’s Birthday Wish Turns Into Tradition Of Giving
BOSTON (CBS) – A young Methuen girl’s birthday wish has turned into a tradition of giving. Most kids can quickly rattle off their birthday demand, but 10-year-old Kailey Moras has just one request: to help others.
Kailey helped offload a haul of more than 500 items Friday. Everything from toddler clothing to toys was collected by Kailey in lieu of receiving her own gifts.
“This is a 10-year-old girl who in honor of her birthday, she was thinking about other kids,” said Lynn Margherio, CEO of Cradles to Crayons.
This isn’t something new for Kailey. She started a drive to help others three years ago.
“She was just seven and she asked me if we could ask people to bring brand new shoes to donate instead of a birthday present for herself,” said Jeff Moras, Kailey’s father.
Her parents were shocked by the request, but quickly got behind their daughter. Kailey gathered more than 400 pairs of shoes that first year.
“The outpouring of support from family and friends and people we didn’t even know was just amazing,” Jeff Moras said.
She has now teamed up with Cradles to Crayons. Their mission to give low-income kids the essentials they need to survive.
“It makes me feel great because all the kids that can’t do stuff that I get to do now will get to do it,” Kailey said.
Kailey says she has no plans to change her birthday wish for next year.
