There are children across the country currently facing clothing insecurity, lacking access to affordable, adequate, and seasonally appropriate clothing. These are kids who may head to school without warm coats, properly fitting shoes, or enough clean clothes for the week. For families already balancing housing costs, groceries, transportation, and childcare, everyday clothing essentials can quickly become out of reach.

The good news? Hosting a clothing drive with Cradles to Crayons® is one of the simplest and most meaningful ways to help. Our supporters host more than 1,400 clothing drives every year, supporting our work to distribute millions of essential items to children.

Whether you’re organizing through a school, workplace, neighborhood, sports team, or faith community, a successful drive starts with intention, organization, and heart. People want to give back, they just need a platform to do it. Here’s how to turn empathy into action.

1. Start with a Clear Mission and Partner with a Recipient Organization
The most impactful clothing drives are rooted in a clear purpose. Before collecting a single donation, decide:

– Who are you helping?
– What items will be collected? (Click here to view Cradles to Crayons’ most needed items!)
– How long will your drive run?
– Where will donations go?

Reach out to local organizations that serve children who may be experiencing clothing insecurity. Organizations that support low-income and homeless families could include community health centers, food pantries, schools, shelters, and social service agencies. Be sure to reach out prior to starting your drive to understand what their greatest needs are and tailor your efforts to meet those.

Taking time to choose the right recipient organization ensures your donations make the greatest possible impact.

2. Establish Collection Sites and Timeline
Think about where people naturally gather in your community. Identify a few locations where you would like to host your drive and reach out for approval. This outreach can happen in person, through a phone call, or by sending an email. Explain the purpose of the clothing drive, who you want to help, and the details of the drive.

Great donation collection sites include:

– Schools
– Community Centers
– Local businesses
– Places of worship

Once you have established your collection site(s), equip them with boxes or bins that are clearly labeled with drive information. The more collection sites you establish, the more donations you are likely to collect! See how many drop-off locations we have at C2C.

As for how long to run your drive, two to four weeks is usually the sweet spot. It creates urgency while still giving people enough time to participate.

3. Spread the Word
People want to help — they just need a clear call to action and reminders. Once your drive details are determined, it’s time to spread the word. Tap into your network and use the following tools to amplify your message:

– Social media posts
– Community Facebook groups
– School newsletters
– Flyers posted throughout the neighborhood
– Group texts
– Local newspaper

Photos, countdowns, and progress updates help build momentum. Even a quick update like, “We’ve already collected 50 coats!” can energize your community.

4. Sort Donations Before Delivery
Many of the organizations who receive clothing donations are stretched for resources given the nature of their work, so pre-sorting donations can save valuable time and help items reach children faster. Create a mini Giving Factory once your collection ends by following the steps below!

Before dropping off donations:

– Quality check! Remove items that are badly stained or damaged
– Separate by size and gender when possible
– Pair shoes together
– Label boxes/bags clearly

At Cradles to Crayons, we believe that Quality = Dignity because every child deserves dignity and confidence in what they wear. Especially for families facing economic hardship, receiving high-quality clothing matters.

5. Make It More Than a Donation and Celebrate Your Impact
The most memorable drives create connection, not just collection. Consider adding:

– Volunteer sorting events
– Educational discussions about clothing insecurity
– Friendly competitions between classrooms or departments
– Handwritten thank you cards
– A financial fundraising component

Through your efforts, you will likely connect with like-minded folks who want to build on this momentum to address childhood clothing insecurity. The more community members come together and collaborate, the greater the impact this drive (and future drives) will have. Ongoing community engagement creates lasting change, so stay connected with those who stand out as champions for children.

Be sure to celebrate your drive as it wraps up. Activating your community to give back is important work, and the drive’s impact and results is worth acknowledging with the organizations and people you partnered with to make it happen. Together, we can all be part of a larger effort to make sure all kids feel valued, cared for, and ready to thrive.
