What is the Ready for Learning initiative?
For millions of kids in the United States, the biggest back-to-school challenge isn’t a difficult subject or homework assignment – it’s having the right school supplies and finding clothing and shoes that fit. Cradles to Crayons’ Ready for Learning initiative distributes backpacks filled with new, age-appropriate school supplies and packages filled with other essentials, including clothing, shoes, and more. These items are distributed to children at no cost through our network of Service Partners—including major school districts—in Massachusetts, Chicagoland, and Greater Philadelphia.

When children are not prepared with the school supplies and clothing they need, the effects on their academic performance and attendance can be severe.
Families with school-aged children spent an average of $875 on back-to-school supplies in 2024, including $142 on non-electronic school supplies and $424 on clothing and footwear.
